   Your Daily Itinerary
Day 1 Day 1 -- Fairbanks, Alaska
Arrive in Fairbanks this afternoon to meet
your OFF THE BEATEN PATH guides and fellow
adventurous families. This evening, we enjoy
a special gathering for dinner and our
welcome orientation at the home of Mary
Shields, former Iditarod racer, and her
friendly sled dogs.
Accommodations: Pike's Waterfront Lodge
Day 2 Day 2 -- Fairbanks to Denali
This morning, board the historic Alaska
Railroad for the four-hour journey to Denali
National Park. Travel through a 'drunken
forest' and alongside the Nenana River,
enjoying stories from your train hosts along
the way. At the Park entrance, your guides
await to take you on a leg-stretching stroll
to Horseshoe Lake before we continue our
journey through the park. As we make our way
to wilderness lodge accommodations, we'll
hope to catch our first views of bear, moose,
caribou and, of course, spectacular Mount
McKinley!
Accommodations: Kantishna Road House
Day 3-4 Days 3-4 -- Denali National Park
Enjoy two full days of hiking, exploring
and adventuring in the wilds of Denali
National Park. Each day brings opportunities
for hiking and wildlife viewing outings, as
well as options for horseback riding, gold
panning, fishing and mountain biking. We
relax into cozy cabin accommodations at the
historic Roadhouse Inn, which dates to the
Kantishna gold rush of the early 1900s.
Accommodations: Kantishna Road House
Day 5 Day 5 -- Talkeetna
This morning we savor our final views of
Denali, then switch to river rafts for our
mode of transportation! Float the Chulitna
River, with a hot-chocolate-and cookies-stop,
all the way to the town of Talkeetna.
Originally a fishing site for the Tanaina
Indians, then a trading post for gold miners,
and now a rendezvous for 'big mountain'
climbers, Talkeetna is steeped in diverse
histories and local color. After dinner at
our hotel, we fall into bed to dream of high
mountain climbs.
Accommodations: Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge
Day 6 Day 6 -- Talkeetna to Girdwood
Early risers can opt for a
(weather-dependent) flightseeing tour of the
Alaska Range, while others of us catch up on
our shut-eye. Heading south, our next stop is
the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, where we tour the
facilities and learn about this nearly
pre-historic creature and how it is raised
and used today to make some of the softest
clothing ever! Then, it's on to a special
afternoon at the Alaska Native Heritage
Center on the outskirts of Anchorage. Alaskan
Natives from five different Indian cultures
greet us and introduce us to their
traditional lifestyles, crafts and cultures.
In addition to touring the vil...
Accommodations: Alyeska Prince Hotel
Day 7 Day 7 -- Girdwood
Relax a bit today, enjoying free time this
morning to walk and bike with your family on
the many trails that lead from the hotel, or
to lay low and enjoy the hotel's swimming
pool and other amenities. For lunch, we'll
ride the Alyeska Tramway for a
top-of-the-mountain meal, then head to Winner
Creek for an afternoon hike up this
thunderous river gorge--complete with a
self-propelled hand-tram and pulley! This
evening we enjoy a pizza party at a local
restaurant.
Accommodations: Alyeska Prince Hotel
Day 8
Day 8 -- Prince William Sound
An exciting day of glaciers, wildlife and
paddling provides a fitting finale to our
Alaska adventure. We'll travel by boat
through the scenic fjords of Prince William
Sound until we reach Blackstone Bay, viewing
a huge calving glacier as it releases
crashing icebergs. Nearby, in a quiet cove,
receive instruction and safety information
from experienced guides and paddle stable sea
kayaks along the rugged coastline. After a
full day of paddling, picnicking and scoping
for otters, seals and other wildlife, we
return to Girdwood for our final evening
together. Enjoy a going-away get together
and dinner at our hot...
Accommodations: Alyeska Prince Hotel
Day 9 Day 9 -- Depart from Anchorage
Bid goodbye to new friends and Alaska's
vast landscapes today, returning to Anchorage
to catch mid-morning or afternoon flights
home.
