Finesse

Finesse fishing is a very effective technique since it employs light lines and tackle to approach finicky fish, most often in very clear water.

The fishing line you want to use for this type of fishing is typically no heavier than 6 or 8 pound test. An open-faced spinning reel is almost always the reel of choice. Terminal tackle includes hooks, weights and artificial lures—is downsized to smaller sizes and lighter weights. Approaching fishing areas cautiously and quietly is an important part of finesse fishing, as the lighter tackle requires fishing in closer proximity to the fish than with heavier equipment that allows casting from further away.

Finesse fishing is a challenging technique requiring the angler to locate and approach fish without spooking them, to demonstrate knowledge of fish behavior and exercise the skills necessary to place the small bait in front of a skittish fish that lives in a clear environment. When successful, however, anglers feel a distinct sense of accomplishment and enjoy fighting their quarry on the light tackle employed in finesse fishing.
